A motorbike-sized bluefin tuna has sold for £1m at Tokyo’s annual new year auction.

The 276kg fish was bought at Toyosu Fishmarket on Sunday, 5 January by Onodera Group, which aims to serve the tuna across a number of its restaurants.

‘First tuna brings good fortune’

“The first tuna is something meant to bring in good fortune,” Onodera’s Shinji Nagao, told reporters following the auction.

The Japan Times reports that aside from tuna, about 350grams of Hokkaido sea urchin fetched a record-breaking ¥7m, ‘adding excitement to the market’.
