Survey: Brits ‘clueless’ when it comes to seafood

A new survey has found that many British dinners are clueless when it comes to seafood.

The survey, by restaurant booking app The Fork, polled 1,500 Britons about ordering seafood in restaurants.

It was found that dinners were confused by such dishes as pulpo Galicia, gravadlax and gambas.

The survey also revealed that half have misunderstood what is in ‘fritto misto’, with many mistaking the classic dish for chips.

Never filleted a fish

Encouragingly, almost 90% of those polled said that they enjoyed eating fish, however, one in five respondents admitted that they had ordered a dozen oysters only to impress a date.

A similar number have asked for sashimi or ceviche without realising that it is a raw dish (although technically ceviche isn’t raw).

Meanwhile, half thought it was impressive to order a lobster – but with many admitting they had no idea how to use the tools that came with it.

It was a similar scenario with crab, while many said that they had never filleted a fish or knew how to shuck an oyster.

‘Zero idea about fish’

The survey also found that almost half of those polled admitted that the only fish they had ever cooked was battered or breaded, and bought in a supermarket.

Eighty per cent said that they would rather order fish and chips from their local fish and chip shop than ask for a fish dish in a restaurant.

“Patrick Hooykaas, managing director at The Fork, said: “As our research has uncovered, we’re a nation of fish lovers – with absolutely zero idea about fish. From how to pronounce it, to how to unlock maximum meat and flavour.”
