Hold onto your haddocks, folks – the shortlist is in! The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has just dropped this year’s nominations for its UK Product of the Year – Consumer Choice Award, and it’s a veritable buffet of the best in sustainable seafood.
We’re talking everything from premium dinner centrepieces to the first-ever pet food entry (because why shouldn’t the cat eat sustainably too?).
There are 15 certified ocean-friendly contenders on the list – including fish oil capsules, tinned tuna, and even the humble fish stick – all proudly wearing the MSC blue label.
Posh nosh on a budget
The full list of nominations features a wide range of mealtime favourites, including:
Battered cod fillets from Asda and Sainsbury’s,
Fish pie from Co-op,
Captain’s Discoveries Dusted Lemon and Pepper Fillets from Bird’s Eye (arrr, indeed),
And even salmon and pea risotto from Lidl – posh nosh on a budget.
Seafood in a tin
There’s a chilled section to swoon over too: think Waitrose’s No.1 Moules Mariniere with wild garlic and chardonnay (Ooh La La), and Fish Said Fred’s smoked haddock for the more discerning plate.
If you like your seafood in a tin (like we do!) – or your cat does – you’re covered too, thanks to Sheba’s tuna-topped chicken filet and John West’s trusty tuna.
Vote for your seafood favourite
Voting is open from 14 July to 29 August, and all you have to do is head over to msc.org/uk/POTY/25 to cast your vote.
And here’s the best bit: everyone who votes gets entered into a prize draw to win a blow-up kayak worth £579 (hello, wild sea adventures!) or one of two snazzy Nautilus backpacks from Finisterre.
‘Picking a favourite won’t be easy’
The MSC UK Product of the Year winner will be announced at the MSC UK Awards ceremony in Scotland in October.
